William E. Griffin

William Edward Griffin, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on August 1, 1945, in the serene town of Black Mountain, North Carolina, William lived a life that reflected love, hard work, and the joy found in simple pleasures.

William was the cherished son of Loree Griffin, who preceded him in death, along with his grandparents Jerry Daniel Sr. and Allaveretta Daniel, and his dear aunt Aretha Richardson. Raised in a nurturing home, he developed a deep appreciation for family, a value that guided him throughout his life.

In 1960, William made a bold move from North Carolina to Evanston, Illinois, a decision that changed the course of his life. It was there that he met his soulmate, Mary Jean Ball. Their love began with exchanged glances and grew into a lifelong partnership when they married on December 4, 1965. William often expressed his devotion through heartfelt letters, a reflection of his tender and romantic spirit.

William began his career as a dedicated crossroad truck driver, working with determination and pride. Away from the road, he found joy and creativity in the kitchen and on the grill, discovering a passion for cooking that nourished both his family and his soul. He found peace in fishing, the challenge of a good round of golf, and the quiet satisfaction of tending to his garden. His yard reflected his careful nature and his love of life.

With a voice that lifted spirits, William sang gospel music, bringing comfort and joy to those around him. He also painted during his quiet moments, capturing the world through his own thoughtful perspective.

William was a devoted father to his children — Antonio, Brian, Stacy, and Tarellus — each of whom he loved without condition. His wisdom, warmth, and strength will continue to guide his family for generations.

He is survived by his loving wife Mary, who stood by his side through every season of life; his children Antonio (Kelly), Brian (Deb), Stacy (Fellie) McKnight, and Tarellus (Nikkia); his grandchildren Keenen, Quintin, Devin, Jalen, Hailey, Lawren, Quincy, Kyndel, and T’Naye; and his great grandchildren Aaliyah, Terrell, and Lily. He is also survived by his aunt Betty Washington; special cousins Terry Daniel, Florence Sales, and Cora Stafford; his brother-in-law John (Sandy) Ball; and sisters in law — Juanita Griffin, Modenia Graves, Cerecia Buchanan — along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

William will be remembered for his kindness, his laughter, and the love he shared with all who knew him.

A celebration of his life will be held on June 13, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Christian Valley Baptist Church, where family and friends will gather to honor a life lived with grace and purpose.

In remembering William, we celebrate a man who embodied compassion, dignity, and unwavering love. His legacy will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
