Marilyn Benton

November 20, 1931 — July 29, 2025

Marilyn Joan Benton (nee Johnson), 93, passed away on July 29, 2025 in Lansdale, PA.

Mrs. Benton was born and raised in Zion, Illinois where she kept up lifetime friendships with four of her best friends. She married the late William G. Benton on August 15, 1953. They raised 4 children in Devon, PA. Their youngest was born with Down Syndrome, and Marilyn was his life-long advocate, integrating him into every aspect of family and community life. In the late 1960s Marilyn and Bill lobbied the Tredyffrin Easttown School District to provide education for Scott. When TESD refused, they went together with a small group of local parents and hired a special education teacher to teach their children at a local church. Following the landmark 1972 PARC v. Pennsylvania case requiring equal access to education, TESD agreed to hire the teacher and provide a class locally.

Mrs. Benton was a longtime member of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Devon, PA where she taught Sunday School for 20 years. She worked as a clerical and science aid for over 30 years at Hillside Elementary School in Berwyn, PA and was a member of PEO, Chapter O. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, reading, flower arranging and visiting with family.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and her son, Scott William Benton.

She is survived by her children, Susan Clover (Samuel), Steven Benton (Denice), Sharon Plewinski (Joseph); six grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.

Friends and family are welcome at the graveside service at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion, IL at 10 am on August 16th. Reception following at Stone Creek Grill in Winthrop Harbor, IL.
