Calvin J. Simon of Waukegan, IL passed away peacefully after a brief illness April 21, 2025 at Condell Medical Center, Libertyville, IL.
Calvin was born September 4, 1927 in New Orleans, LA. At the age of 19, he moved to Waukegan and was drafted into the Army where he would serve in the Korean War, later receiving a Purple Heart and a UN medal. Upon completion of service, he met and later married his wife of 59 years, Luerie, in November of 1965.
Calvin worked hard and enjoyed multiple endeavors. He retired from Great Lakes Naval Base-Supply Depot after 40 years and was described as "The best lift operator in town!" Cal also worked part time and retired from Eagle's Grocery Store after 32 years. In his spare time, Calvin spent countless hours on the road while also managing to spend quality time with his son driving/chaperoning Boy Scout troops, working as a crossing guard for Waukegan Public Schools and being a volunteer for the Waukegan Citizen's Police Academy.
Calvin was a member of the Waukegan American Legion Post 281 where he served as Commander and a member of the Honor Guard. Thereafter, he became a member of the Gurnee American Legion Post 771.
In his down time, Calvin enjoyed laughing and telling jokes, going on bowling trips, spending time with family, marching in parades, gardening and working/playing Bingo. Calvin especially loved tinkering in the garage and building bird houses, watching a Cub's game, watching the boats on Lake Michigan, taking his grandson's fishing and watching the planes at the airport.
Calvin is survived by his wife, Luerie; children, Anthony Simon, Denice Coleman; grandchildren, Christopher and Alex; and a host of cousins and friends.
Calvin was preceded in death by, daughter; Antoinette Simon; parents and numerous relatives.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 2, 2025 at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, IL from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with a funeral service at 12:00 p.m. followed by internment at Highland Memorial Park, 33100 Hunt Club Rd, Libertyville, IL.
