Agnes Custer

Agnes “Aggie” Custer, (nee Patterson), 84, of Zion, IL, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on April 22, 2023.

Born December 20, 1938 in North Chicago, IL, she is the second daughter of the late Delbert W. And Veronica E. (Ptasienski) Patterson. Agnes attended the former Holy Rosary School of North Chicago, IL and was a 1956 graduate of the former Holy Child High School of Waukegan, IL. She married the love of her life, Albert “Pee Wee” Custer on January 23, 1960 in a civil ceremony in Wadsworth, IL and again on April 7, 1962 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Waukegan, IL. Their married life extended over 62 years. Born to them were five children, three sons and two daughters. On June 1, 2022 Albert preceded her death.

Agnes was a member of Our Lady of Humility Church and served on the bereavement committee. She was an excellent cook and was always proud to make her specialities and share them with others. She also had a green thumb with her houseplants, garden and flowers, enjoyed quilting and was an avid reader with a very large book collection. Agnes was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post #7448 of Winthrop Harbor, IL serving as recording secretary for several years and volunteering at the VA hospital, she was also a member of Ladies Auxiliary to PLAV (Polish Legion of American Veterans) Post #25 North Chicago, IL and past Vice President of PLAV Auxiliary and member of PLAV Post #188 at McHenry, IL. She retired from Abbott Laboratories after 17 years.

Agnes is survived by her children, David W. (Korinne) Custer of Winthrop Harbor, IL, Melanie A. (Larry) Molback of Zion, IL, John A. (Carolyn) Custer of Helensville, WI.; ten grandchildren, Joshua and Elizabeth Custer, Cameron Custer, Anthony (Devon) Pope, Colleen B. Pope, Brittany Sharp, Brandon (Jaque) Custer, Travis Smith, Jonah and Hayden Custer; ten great-grandchildren, Mahala and Connor Pope, Jacob McWhorter, Elijah Pope, Oliviah Custer, Nathaniel Sharp, Kyra Sharp, Jacob Custer, Elias Smith, Lynix Custer; brother, James E. (Donna) Patterson, North Chicago, IL; sisters-in-law, Judith Patterson of Winthrop Harbor, IL and Rosemary (Eastman) Hedrick of Van Buren, MO; brother-in-law, Eugene Rampale, Sr. Lindenhurst, IL.; god-children, Linda Saxon and Jack Bennett Jr.; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert “Pee Wee” Custer; her parents; daughter Elizabeth; son, Anthony J. Custer; brothers, M. Tom Eastman, Joseph Patterson, John G. Patterson; sisters, Elizabeth Ann Patterson, Carole Rampale, and Mary Cook; granddaughters, Katherine Custer (a twin), Nancy Custer; and one nephew, Patrick Eastman.

Visitation will be held on Monday May 1, 2023 from 4:00 p.m until 7:00 p.m at the Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, IL. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 10:30 a.m at Our Lady Of Humility Church 10655 W. Wadsworth Road, Beach Park, IL Interment will follow at Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville, IL.
