Obituary of Roy Rowland Brooks

Roy Rowland Brooks, 95 passed away on June 7, 2015. He was born on March 3, 1920 in Zion and lived in Zion until last year when he moved to Minnesota to be closer to family. He attended parochial school in Zion and graduated from Waukegan High School in 1938. He served our country during WWII in the U.S. Navy. While stationed in Jacksonville, FL he married Margaret Ray in 1943. They were married for over 66 years. He built a home on Ezekiel, raised four children and lived there for 63 years. Roy was a member of Zion Bible Church for over 65 years. He served on the Board, taught Sunday School, drove the Sunday School bus and was always involved in painting, repairing and mowing over the years. Roy worked for Nosco as a printer, retiring in 1986. After retiring he golfed nearly every day and had two “hole in one’s”. He had a garden every year– tomatoes being his favorite - until he was in his 90’s. Survivors include, sons Rob Brooks of Ft. Lauderdale FL, Tom (Debbie) Brooks of Denver, CO , daughter Janet(Ed ) Erickson of Minneapolis, MN and son Steve Brooks of Rockville, MD. Grandchildren Christy (Armando) Santiago , Becky (Eric) Sowder. Sarah (Jerrod) Buys and Katherine ( Mike) Malander, 14 great grandchildren, brother Robert (Eleanor) Brooks and nieces and nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his wife Margaret, father and mother Ross and Marie brooks and siblings Walter Brooks, Dorothy McFarland and Harry Brooks. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, IL, with Rev. Dan Diehl, officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
